Rosedale
Valley
Rosedale
Valley is about 40 hectares (99 acres) of ravine that
was formed approximately 10 000 years ago at the end
of the Wisconsin Ice Age. Melted rivers and streams
eroded the glacier deposits that created these deep
ravines.
In
1824, Sheriff William Botsford Jarvis bought 48.6
hectares (120 acres) in the Rosedale Valley area.
He built a country estate for his wife Mary who later
named there country home "Rosedale". The ravine was
an ideal playground for local children who caught
trout in the creek and built dams for swimming holes
and ice rinks.
Today,
a network of pathways for walking, jogging cycling
and scenic drives, connect Yonge Street to the Don
Valley. This remaining wooded area contains oak, pine,
basswood, maple, and ash trees. The diversity of plant
life creates a rich habitat for small mammals and
a significant environment for resident and migratory
birds.
